Eating healthy is hard. We may be able to succeed for a time but when we go to a party and see people eating donuts and etc., our saliva glands start to trigger our brains that’s it’s party time. It sounds like I’m about to say, “Say no to party food!” but I’m not. I’ve been there. We all love to party and eat with people because eating with people and enjoying food is a part of DNA. Of course it’s wonderful to splurge and have a twinkie but when we fully understand what the food does to our bodies, we begin to see those foods that hurt the body differently. It’s important to understand the “why” behind our health along with how we feel when we eat certain foods. For example, how do you feel when you eat a donut? Pay attention to all your senses. Do your lips tingle? Do you have less energy? Can you feel the food digesting? Excess amounts of gas? Pain when digesting? Fun tip: if you can feel your food digesting, it’s not digesting properly. Now let’s talk about the why.
Many types of junk food have little to no nutritional value but our bodies need nutrients to thrive. In every cell of our body is something called the mitochondria, also known as the powerhouse of the cell and our bodies need nutrients to feed this cell. If not given the right type and amount of nutrients( which are found in whole foods), these cells will not be fed and many of the basic functions of our bodies won’t function properly. It is like a domino effect. Once one part of the cell doesn’t function, another part begins to fail because it relies on other parts of the body. We have to remember to set a good foundation and that begins at the base of our cells. This is one way eating junk food impacts our bodies but other things like hormone imbalance, digestive issues, and unnamed diseases can derive from lack of nutrients to the mitochondria.
I think it’s important to give yourself the freedom to splurge; however, it’s when we have the knowledge and the practice of understanding how we feel that we desire nothing but the stuff that makes you feel good. Here’s an idea to help you practice and pave new pathways for your brain: find snacks you enjoy that provide your body with the nutrients you need so you’re prepared to bring to any party!
